How to Choose Abstract Wall Art for a Living Room

A good artwork changes how a living room feels. It can make a quiet room more defined, bring warmth to a pale wall, or give a simple interior a focal point that feels considered rather than decorative.

Start with proportions

Choose the size before choosing the design. A single vertical print above a console, chair or narrow wall works best when it has enough visual weight to hold the space. A3 suits smaller areas; 50 × 70 cm and 70 × 100 cm make a stronger statement in a main seating area.

For art above furniture, aim for a piece or arrangement that spans roughly two-thirds of the furniture width. Leave breathing room around it so the composition has presence without crowding the wall.

Use colour with restraint

Pick up one or two tones already in the room, such as the colour of a cushion, timber, rug or curtain. The artwork does not need to match exactly. A related warm tone or a deliberate contrast often makes the room feel more complete.

In neutral interiors, bold shapes and deeper colours can add focus. In a colourful room, a quieter print with space around the forms can bring balance.

Match the forms to the room

Curves soften rooms with clean-lined furniture. Geometric compositions create order in more relaxed spaces. For an interior that needs structure without feeling cold, Bauhaus-inspired posters combine colour, rhythm and strong form.

Explore abstract art prints for expressive colour and movement, or geometric wall art for a more architectural feel.

Hang it with intention

Place the centre of the artwork at around 145 to 150 cm from the floor, then adjust for the scale of the room and furniture beneath it. The key is to view it from where you actually sit. Art should work from the sofa, the doorway and the everyday angles of the room.

Build a pair or a gallery wall

Two prints can create a calm, symmetrical rhythm. Keep the frame finish and spacing consistent, then let colour or form vary between the artworks. For a gallery wall, use a shared palette or visual language instead of identical designs.

Choose a finish that lives well

Matte art paper reduces reflections and keeps colour balanced throughout the day. Fablewalls prints are produced on 200gsm enhanced matte art paper and supplied unframed, giving you the freedom to choose a frame that suits your home.
